Writing Assignments

Assign kids some of these reptile- and amphibian-related writing assignments:

Flushed
Have kids write a story about a baby snake, frog, or alligator who is flushed down the toilet. What happens next? Does he or she grow into some kind of giant sewer monster? Are they adopted by another critter? Do they find a way out and live in the wild or become someone else’s pet?

How the Turtle Got Its Shell
Have kids invent their own creative origin stories describing how the turtle first got its shell, including why a turtle needs its shell and whatever scary encounters prompted it to grow one.

Reptile Reports
Have kids research a particular type of reptile or amphibian and write a report on that creature.

Misunderstood Creatures
Reptiles and amphibians aren’t the most beloved creatures in the eyes of many humans. Have kids write an essay on why these creatures are so misunderstood, from the perspective of a particular reptile or amphibian. For example…

  • I can’t help it if I slither. What would you do if you had no legs?
  • Just because I’m slimy that doesn’t mean I’m bad.
  • Don’t be offended by my big sharp teeth, I much prefer to eat fish as opposed to you.

If I Had A Pet Alligator
Tell kids to imagine they had a pet alligator or crocodile, and write an essay describing how they would take care of it and all the fun or mischievous things they would do together.

Mutant Creatures
Have kids write a story about some type of mutant reptile or amphibian, including what it is, what it looks like, how it got that way and what it spends its days doing.
