Slithery Snakes (All Ages)
Gather several long jump ropes and head outside. Have kids move the jump ropes so they slither around on the ground like snakes while the others jump over and around trying to avoid them.
Anaconda Dance
Go to a fabric store and purchase a long piece of cheap fabric, something that’s roughly a yard by 8-10 yards. If you’d like, you can take it outside and have kids paint/dye a snake pattern on one side of it. Once dry, have kids position themselves all along the strip of fabric and lift it over their heads, holding it over themselves. Then have kids dance around and move about the playground like a giant snake, much like the people you see dancing with a giant dragon costume during festivals in China.
Find the Snake (All Ages)
Get a small rubber snake and bring it outside. Have one child find a spot to hide it while the others close their eyes and count to 30. The only rule: You can’t conceal the snake completely (say, by burying it under the wood chips). It has to be like an actual snake – barely visible but seen if you look closely. The first child to find the snake wins! Then hide the snake and play again.
Slithering Snake Races (All Ages)
Have kids lay down on their belly on the grass or another soft surface, holding their hands behind their back. Line them up and set a finish line 15-20 feet away. Then when you yell “Go,” have kids try to slither their way to the finish line without using their arms or knees, finding a way to propel themselves forward just by wiggling their torso and lower body back and forth. They should end up with a newfound appreciation for a snake’s abilities!
