This is a prop box that can be assembled and used in a variety of ways for any theme and for all ages. It’s essentially a pretend science lab that can be adapted towards any subject, and is a must-have for teachers who are serious about bringing science into the classroom. Put together a prop box with some of the following items:

 

• Magnifying glasses
• Clipboards, paper, writing utensils, & a plastic ruler
• Theater prop glasses
• Small Ziploc “specimen” bags or specimen containers
• Plastic science vials
• A microscope

The idea board
Gather several clothespins and attach a piece of Velcro to the back. Attach the other piece somewhere on the wall in your dramatic play area. This makes a great prop for children to hang pictures like an x-ray, and can be adapted to any theme.

 

Crazy hair
Scientists are known for their crazy hair. So try to gather a few white scientist wigs. It will help them get into the spirit.

 

Visual props
Gather some maps or scientific charts or materials. The fold-out maps and charts that often come in National Geographic work well, as will an old chart of the periodic table of elements. Lacking this, you can even gather some pages ripped from magazines that explore various science-related concepts. These visual materials will give an added dimension to this activity as they look through and “read” the materials in their play.

 

Name badges
Add some name badge stickers or pick up some reusable plastic-sleeved name badges from a business supply store.

 

This science prop box can be used whenever you need something fun for dramatic play. Simply pull it out and let kids invent their own script. It can also be used to provide an added dimension whenever you explore specific science topics or activities.
